What are the Steps to Designing an Opex System From Scratch Using the Shingo Model?
The Shingo System is based on a number of foundational principles and philosophies mostly developed in Japanese manufacturing but also added to by some of the great thought leaders as indicated in the image above. Some of the basic principles are as follows:
1 Ideal results require ideal behaviours. sustainable excellence emerges from the daily behaviours of people throughout an organization.
2. Purpose and systems drive behaviour.
3. Principles inform and govern behaviour.
The following suggests a people centered approach to organically building in an operational excellence system into a company from the ground up. True culture change happens, which is essential for the Shingo system to work, is based on respect and combined will and commitment of all stakeholders. The following shows the recommended steps for successful implementation.
Step 1: Utilise Action Research Change management model from top to bottom of organisation to brainstorm the company’s needs, problems, and opportunities for Opex
Step 2: Establish Systems and Tools across network to build capability to address findings
i.e: Problem Solving Kit, OEE Imrovement Kit, CI Cycles, Tier Board Systems, Belt System, Project Pipeline, SMED, VSM,
Step 3: Educate and Integrate Shingo principles and Cultural Enablers to Build and Maintain Disciplines
Step 4: Continually educate, assess, design, implement, evaluate in cycle of Opex
