Learn to Lead Change That Leads to A Culture of Respect and Growth

Change management requires a structured approach, taking into account multiple change models, be adaptive to the diverse perspective and dynamics of the organisation members, take into account emotional, and resistance forces.

Leading has to do with gaining co-operation among the different individuals and groups in an organization. In an organization, groups of people must coordinate their activities to meet organizational objectives, primarily meeting the needs of customers. Achievement of organizational goals is attainable through good leadership and management. Hence, having good leaders is crucial to any organization, but is management also important? Kotter (1990) argues that management is about producing consistency, order and dealing with complexity while leadership is about dealing with change.

There is a connection between what leadership style is employed in an organization and the culture that develops as a result. Haydon (2007, p.90) counsels that organizations need to beware which leadership style they employ because leadership approach will affect the underlying culture; however, this can be viewed as a positive opportunity to produce a desired organizational culture. A successful strategic leader will be able to do just that by articulating what the school will look like in 5 years and what the culture will feel like (Davies and Davies, 2010, p. 24).

John Kotter, Leadership Expert

Management of culture in organisation is essentially management of emotions and leadership need to ’express and embrace norms and values in a way that generates strong feelings’ which lead to motivation and will to work towards the goals and mission of the organisation or on the projects in question.

Emotional intelligence is an important asset in leadership practice. Leaders who understand mood and are able to manage changing moods and emotions are able to lead better (George, 2000). George (2000) suggests that leadership towards achievement of company mission is achieved by generating strong feelings of motivation through intelligent expression and living of company norms and values that build organisational culture.
